  6. As to your larger point, making people government serfs in return for loan forgiveness sounds a lot like slavery. Just opens up another Pandora's Box for abuse. People need to quit borrowing money they can't afford to pay back. Period. MAYbe you could make a case for colleges and universities' responsibility to the student, but the bottom line is that if you're borrowing money for an education, the lender should exercise more prudence. Is it a viable program of study? Is the student making satisfactory progress towards that educational goal? Can they reasonably be expected to pay it back?
