I endorse the sentiment, but I don't like there being a separate category called "hate crime" that gives the federal government a wedge to interfere in local and state crimes. There should be no separate category for "murder" and "hate murder." State law and judicial precedents cover all the different reasons you might commit a crime, and that comes into play in the penalty phase. "He did it just because he hates so-and-so" is already covered. So what I'm saying is that I agree that you should be subject to the same penalties as the person you knowingly, falsely accused of a crime was facing. Whatever the max sentence is for being falsely convicted should be the max sentence for the false accusation of said crime. Bearing false witness against another person is far more heinous than it is treated in court. How many "I lied about being attacked" cases have their been? In every single case, the harm caused to the falsely accused was instant and lifelong. You never get your reputation back after a false allegation.
