  1. Alexis de Tocqueville related what he witnessed in the USA: Two farmers meeting at the fence line between their properties discussing the issues of the day, and goings-on in Washington, DC. There was no equivalent in France or Europe more generally. He went to an orchestral concert, and sitting side by side were laborers and their wives in homespun and rich couples in formal evening wear. The idea that people of all economic strata not only went to such cultural events, but thought nothing of the class/income level of the people right next to them was utterly unheard of in Europe.

  2. Ahh, to have a YOUNG country! The USA's been here for over 200 years, and although the formal class structure (Royalty, Aristocracy, and peasants) isn't explicitly in force, there is a clear "class" of would-be aristocrats, whose disdain for regular folks is undeniable. We're seeing all the old forms of feudalism slowly creep in. The "new aristocracy" consists of the billionaire class and the bureaucrats, who see themselves as aristocrats.
