  2. Hmmm. Maybe the dog isn't looking to manipulate, but the eye contact with the human tells the dog that the human is looking to the dog for leadership. Then pulling on the leash to correct the dog's "Let's go over here!" is sending the dog mixed signals. "But you said 'Where do you want to go?' and then you stopped me from going? This makes no sense!" Whether it's your interpretation or mine (or some other canine reason), clearly eye contact in that situation is a mistake.
