  1. Russia's been under siege from Islam since forever. Much as they wanted the Eastern Bloc as a buffer against invasion from the West. Russians/Soviets were always good chess players. And they've always thought a lot more defensively, first and foremost. Russia's a threat, the same as the U.S. is a threat, as an oversized nation-state, that's big enough to bully others. We don't just impose sanctions on Russia. We implore and arm-twist our allies into backing us (or even instigating for us) in questionable military operations abroad. Things have gotten bad enough in Canada, that real separatist movements are rising. Eastern Canada takes revenues out of the West, and they steamroll them on taxation from remote cities, far from Alberta. In a way, this might be better. Canada's not welded that tightly. I think it'd be kind of cool to see nation-states become irrelevant to a distributed network that manages itself on the micro level, naturally. That's what you want. And good folks will operate that way in the proper setting.
