  1. I'll take your word for it and thank you for the history lesson. We see some of the same things happening in the USA, where huge swaths of territory want to break away from domination by delusional and out-of-touch city-dwellers. Let them have the coastal cities. But make everything East of the Cascades part of Greater Idaho. Let Portland and Seattle do their thing, but don't let them make the rules for people who live outside the Urban Bubble.

  3. It also keeps its neighbors weak. Russians are pretty paranoid about chaos in the West spilling over into their territory. Americans forget these people get invaded in a big way about every 100 years, when Europe gets drunk on the smell of its own farts and wars erupt that escalate due to entangled alliances.
