Under Bushido, surrender is dishonor and anything that happens to you after that, you got coming to you. Centuries of that steeped into their culture, even though real Samurai were few and far between by the 20th Century. But the disdain for a defeated enemy still ran strong. It's how they would expect to be treated in defeat by an enemy. At least that's my impression. The Japanese have always been cursed by not being self-sufficient. Like the Germans, they were painfully aware of the threats to their sovereignty posed by European (and later, American) powers who tried to control them by cutting off vital resources. This is an unacceptable situation for a nation that is jealous of its sovereignty, and why wouldn't they be? After growing up despising the Japanese, fed on Hollywood war movies and newsreels, my take on the situation is much more understanding of the Japanese side. I don't think they were saints, but I can totally understand their hatred and fear of Euro-American colonizers.
