I wouldn't put anything past the U.S. Government. I was one of few who thought Bush II administration and media manufactured consent. It was non-stop "support our troops," when only a handful of voices questioned the policies putting our boys in harm's way.
When I look at countries like Iran, I can't help but wonder what they would look like, now, if they weren't under constant threat from U.S./NATO. History teaches that the most regressive forms of Islam rise when Muslim nations are wiped out by external forces. I'm not justifying everything coming out of the region, but the Iranian model, in particular, CAN evolve through democratic processes that are much more conservative and slower to change, but DO change, over time.
I always wonder if we'd see the BEST of Islam if we didn't just keep beating these nations down. Before the Mongols, the region was leading the world in enlightenment. Then, periodically over the following centuries, Europeans picked up where the Mongols left off, with crusades and later, the British Empire. You can't prove a negative, so I have no way of proving what Islam would look like, today, were it not beaten down, over and over, since the 13th Century.
In such circumstances, the prevailing religions tend to take on a very warlike and regressive appearance. When the people are suffering, they gravitate to leaders who beat the war drums. This is not unique to the Muslim world. The Christian world, and the Mongol, Roman, and Greek worlds before them, were pretty much the same. Clever/ruthless leaders will always seek to weaponize the unifying force of religion to their advantage. It's a story as old as civilization.
