I remember scoffing at Soviet propaganda and leftists in the USA talking about American imperialism. This was back in the 1970s and 1980s, when legacy media still had credibility, and the American system was still (mostly) free-market capitalist. It was EASY to make a clear distinction between Soviet rule and American rule(s). But now that American elites are almost entirely socialist and top-down in their thinking, the American system has grown into an authoritarian state in its own right, and its "fighting for democracy" mask has slipped. We are following old Roman and British (modeled on Rome) empire models. In fact, many of our policies are derived directly from Victorian-era imperial designs (and arrogance) from Great Britain, often going against our own national interest and protecting the economic hegemony of now-withered European empires around the world. The USA doesn't need foreign oil. Why do we fight over it? Are we afraid that too many people will have access to clean, abundant energy?

You'd be surprised about how many people are wise to this nonsense and who know some of the history of our bad behavior in the West. Don't judge the USA's state of mind by the legacy media we pump everywhere. The legacy media aren't watched or believed, except by a small and shrinking minority. The legacy-media stranglehold on the public square is over. What we have now is its reluctant but inevitable retreat, and its desperate attempts to make everyone (including you) believe that those legacy media speak for the American people. Sadly, there are still too many Americans who still watch the legacy media. They're mostly older folks, who debate over whether FOX is better or the other legacy networks are better, when actual thinking persons listen to NEITHER FOX nor the Democrat-run networks not called "FOX." For that matter, FOX is infested by Operation Mockingbird types who rubber-stamp whatever the lunatics in the security state feed them. YouTube is doing its best to be an extension of old engines for the manufacture of consent. It's still a battle. I don't think it will be over until YouTube and FaceBook's domination (government-subsidized-and-controlled) is eroded, as well.
