  1. If you go around sanctioning everybody, eventually you teach them to survive by other means. Eventually, they no longer need you, and because of your bullying behavior, they no longer WANT you. I'm not against punitive tariffs, if a trading partner is unfair to us or to their own people. Let them know that they can make the same or more money by being nicer to everyone. But trying to HURT or CONTROL other countries by heavy-handed sanctions, calculated to do the greatest harm possible, you're not making friends. The more complete the economic encirclement, the more desperate the nation that is encircled. It is possible to constructively engage other nations. All nations. But it needs to be measured and fair to both sides, and you can't lie about it being good for you when it's not, or about it being good for the other nation when it's not.
