The poor are encouraged to live single-parent-style by the government bureaucrats. The middle class stopped depending on their children for retirement in the 20th Century, due to prosperity. To poor people BEFORE the welfare state, kids were free labor and a comfortable retirement. To prosperous, middle-class adults, children are an expense that gets in the way of retirement plans, postponing them. But even people who don't need their kids for their retirement still want their kids around, usually. They just don't know it until they're getting closer to the end, and feel isolated. The BIGGEST benefit of traditional families is how much better off the children are than those raised in single-parent settings. The world makes sense and is more secure, during their formative years.
