  1. Local government control of police is a tradition fraught with abuse and corruption. The cops are only as good as the politicians, and of course, in our big cities, the top cops, themselves are politicians. The wealthy are automatically given "special rights" under such systems. Their kids get a slap on the wrist for crimes the poor kid down the block gets locked-up for. The local (and state) police run interference for politicians who can't keep it in their pants. Why do you think Bill Clinton was never arrested or humiliated for his many, predatory infidelities? Private policing is also fraught with abuse and corruption, but it doesn't have a blank check and isn't indemnified by the local, city or state government.
