  1. When you learn the history of Europe and especially the expansion by civilized Rome into "heathen lands," the pattern is much the same. The "conquered land" was pretty much fought over for centuries by the people living there and various impulses of foreign invasion. Wars of extermination were fought long before "civilized" people arrived, and the only real difference was the "civilized" people kept written records!
