Our intelligence community routinely exaggerated Soviet capabilities by a factor of 10 or more, throughout the Cold War. I remember using "facts and statistics" to back my hawkish opinions in the 1980s. Yes. Peace through Strength IS the way to go, but how strong is strong enough and what does that have to do with fighting proxy wars around the globe? What does that have to do with regime-change foreign policy? Libya was no threat to us. Iraq was no threat to us. Afghanistan was no threat to us. Russia is no threat to us, unless we scare the bear enough for them to go nuclear in what they perceive as a true existential threat. Before blaming them for invading Ukraine, we need to talk about our own actions in Ukraine, and political leadership that's up to its eyeballs in corruption there.
