  2. 9:30 : The 'backlash from the planners (elites)' against the people getting too independent dates back (at least) to Bismarck, although you see its seeds in Machiavelli's "The Prince." In the 19th Century, the ruling class of Junkers in Germany was being pushed aside (ignored) by common people as a result of free markets and the industrial revolution. Bismarck's brilliant idea was to institute socialized medicine, to keep the ruling class 'relevant.' And Germany fell for it. Very small step from there to "planned economy," and government picking winners (big, centralized) and losers (small and de-centralized). Very small step from that to Hitler, who portrayed the geopolitical situation as an existential threat (much as the ruling class in Japan at the time), and therefore it was everyone's "duty" to support the war effort for "the Fatherland."
