I first got interested in the Dakotas as a pre-law student, because Arnie Bakke was a geology major from North Dakota, always with his prospector's pick on the Idaho fishing trips I led some of my dorm crowd on. Then I left the university due to money, went to a state college, where I got MY geology degree! Idaho's a great state for geology degrees, and a great staging area for all the best geology of the Western USA. Anyway, the Dakotas have the Black Hills Dome, which one can spend a lifetime exploring. Just the coolest place for a rock-hound/student of the planet.

  2. The greatest thing about Trump was what he did NOT do. As a 1970s Democrat, he believes in letting states rum most of their own stuff within their own means and learn from and compete with one another. He could've gone after South Dakota for not mindlessly issuing mandates. I'm sure a Democrat president would've heaped scorn upon and threatened sanctions against South Dakota. That's the thing about America. You can't MAKE America. You can only LET America. Politicians want to make things happen, but their job is to stay out of the way and let people, towns, and states make things happen for themselves, within their own means. That was the unique thing about American history. The people were expanding beyond the means of any central authority on the East coast to control. The MOST the government could do was create a false imprimatur of legality to a culture clash that was happening on the ground, far beyond the state's ability to project enough power to impose order. The Black Hills, part of which lie in South Dakota, were set aside for the Sioux, until illegal prospectors found gold, and then there was just no stopping a huge influx of people to the area. It attracted profiteers, profiteers profited, profiteers bought the government.

Case in point: Missile strikes in Syria in retaliation for chemical attacks everyone is pretty sure were false flag. Assad had decisive tactical and strategic advantage. The only thing that could cost him that would be something stupid, like a chemical attack, when conventional means were already winning it for you. Then all of a sudden, USA is lobbing missiles. That was one of Trump's low points in foreign policy, and it's the one thing he received universal praise for doing. smh
