When the "smart people" are pushing for dumb stuff, things go to hell very quickly. People don't understand the liberty that brought them prosperity.   9. It's like karma for the Opium Wars. It's our own fault for being the prey nation and China being the predator. We had no qualms when the situation was reversed. I say "We" but Opium Wars" were British pushing opium to complete a trade triangle for their empire. But the USA followed their heavy-handed example, using force to open up Japan in the 19th Century.
