Nationalism is a unifying force that can lead to just as much bad as good. Once you're nationalist, all it takes is being convinced something's a threat to your nation and you will forgive all kinds of extreme actions, because you'll see it as an existential threat.

@off6848 The part that you don't get about individualism is to make the most of it, you need to keep others in the game with you, without any coercion. They have to want to come back. So, you offer fair deals. You go the extra mile to build brand loyalty. All these good things you end up doing without being told by some bureaucrat. Technocracy is the inevitable end game for any other way of doing things. Disinterested 3rd parties making decisions on your behalf, constrained by government budgets and political winds.

@ATXRobot They're adjacent to one another, but jingoism is more just belligerent chauvinism. Nationalism can make questioning the government about anything a crime or just socially unacceptable. Jingoism implies a kind of disdain for other nations and peoples.
