  1. In math, the big push in college is "co-requisites," where you take a student who's not ready for the course they're signed up for and you give them a crash course in the prerequisite material. Nobody says "Why don't they take a remedial course? Why were they allowed into this course, unprepared?" It's especially annoying to me, because we're a community college that teaches remedial courses! I think the problem is the high schools and some of our own remedial-math instructors. THEY want a high success rate, so they don't hold students to a very high standard, and then we college-level teachers get dragged through the dirt, because we fail such a high percentage of students. I've been teaching for over 30 years, now. It's a constant battle to uphold standards.
