  1. You always get overtaken by climbers, cynics and power-seekers when you BECOME the establishment. That's why there's so much cognitive dissonance about "speaking truth to power." Liberals ARE the power, but in the process of TAKING power, they're now exactly like the reactionaries they defeated, starting with the peace movement of the 1960s. They're even MORE prone to this kind of corruption because they absolutely see themselves as outsiders, speaking for the disenfranchised and disadvantaged. The welfare state's been in place long enough, the poverty and disadvantage we see can be laid at the feet of liberals, who still think that MORE wrong-headed policies are needed to repair the harm done by the ORIGINAL wrong-headed policies. They can't blame Republicans (USA) or Conservatives (UK) for homelessness, crime and poverty. They have to OWN it..

  2. The liberal project didn't fail. It succeeded pretty spectacularly. But somewhere along the way, it switched from meaning free FROM government to dependence ON government. We got the freedom thing right, but we give it back in dribs and drabs, every time we ask government to protect us from some new thing.
