  2. The problem with what we call "liberals" in the USA is that they always jump straight from recognizing an inequity to some RIDICULOUS and counter-productive policy prescription. Peterson puts it very succinctly: Just because I oppose your poverty program doesn't mean I'm FOR poverty, you nincompoop! You're just offering simple-minded one-size-fits-all solutions to problems that are VERY complex, without ANY reasonable consideration of unintended consequences. Society, as it exists, consists of a MULTITUDE of interactions and interdependencies with which you meddle at your peril. Nobody more dangerous than the person who says "I just read Marx and now I'm going to re-make the world."

  8.  @ladderallthinking8790  : Some key ideas I like from Britain were brought to the Isle by Germanic tribes*, with a "first among equals" idea for leaders, and if you didn't like a leader, you simply stopped following him! The notion that the king is answerable to his subjects is largely a Germanic/Scandinavian concept. The idea of a king being "anointed by God" came from France. Still Norsemen. Just Norse who were 'civilized' by vestiges of the Roman Empire. Catholicism was a great unifying principle for kings who wanted to hegemonize large territories. *From David Starkey's "Monarchy."

The supposedly liberal-minded people are the people who created the zeitgeist and the institutional framework that enabled and empowered these postmodernist assholes in the first place. Gave them HUGE levers, so a small number of LUNATICS could move the entire country in a VERY unhealthy direction, via bloated and too-powerful institutions "for our own good." TRUE liberals - CLASSICAL liberals - understand that the main thing people need from government is to be LEFT THE HELL ALONE! The bureaucracy is the new aristocracy. Liberty-minded people have seen - and warned against - so-called "liberals'" government-centric solutions to all problems associated with the human condition. And now that the "true liberals" are FINALLY seeing the madness, they are totally blind to their own hand in creating it. Of COURSE our institutions were going to be hijacked by postmodernists or something quite similar. The mistake was giving centralized institutions so much power over everything. Back in the '80s, I called it the iron fist inside the velvet glove. Nanny government is just an engine of tyranny waiting for bad times and/or pathological individuals to subvert to their own malevolent ends. They don't even have to be malevolent to cause tremendous pathology and suffering. It's infuriating the way they act all surprised at the way things are heading. They fed the dragon for DECADES and now they cry out in shock and horror when it razes the town with its flaming exhalations. This is exactly what the left have been asking for, and now they're pissed at everyone but themselves when they GOT what they asked for. The tripod of fascist oppression is state-run media, education and health. That's all Hitler needs. That's what we've got. It's the same in the USA as the UK, only in the USA, the media controls are - or rather were until quite recently - below the level of public perception. American health system is also essentially run (very inefficiently) by government, although no one seems to understand, let alone admit it. Now the mask is slipping. I just hope it's not too late. So many are hopelessly captured. On the bright side, the Hate Mobs are very fickle. Today's protester is tomorrow's victim. Just have ONE thought of your own, and the mob turns on you. This "red-pills" a lot of liberals, who, to their credit, often discover principles of liberty and free speech quite late in life, when NOTHING would have budged them from their convictions, otherwise. To their discredit, they were FINE with running roughshod over others, as long as they were an accepted member of the mob.

It's a very mixed bag, our history with the French. Napoleon Bonaparte was a right bastard, but he did what he could to help the colonies win their independence. America would've remained a British colonial possession for MUCH longer if Britain weren't locked in a death struggle with Napoleon.

  12. He's put a lot of things together very neatly. Humans need archetypes. We are hard-wired for archetypes. There are fundamental contradictions inherent to the human being that religion addresses. At the same time, religions that persist are inescapably political and hence toxic to some degree. He sees it all as neither black nor white, but NUANCED. He doesn't really come down firmly on one side or another, but rather warns of the dangers of being too firmly of one conviction or another. In the end, he's almost Taoist. Faith in an omniscient being promising everlasting life is irrational. So is rejecting the notion. Pascal's wager, etc.

  13. Postmodernism is the systematic de-construction of everything that is free-market capitalism and Western Civilization. Peterson explained it very neatly by saying the postmodernists rose because after word of the Soviet Gulag got out, you couldn't explicitly promote socialism and be taken seriously. So, instead of promoting socialism, directly, they began attacking everything NOT socialism, until by process of elimination, socialism started looking like a (the only) viable alternative. They've been at it so long and been so successful, that people are now openly socialist and they don't get laughed (or cursed) off the damn stage like they would have 30 or 40 years ago.
