  1. Christianity was every bit as repressive and regressive as Islam. It evolved. It is evolving. Both Judeo-Christian and Islam religions have a lot to do with tribal survival. They worked pretty well, or they would'n't've metastasized over the Earth. Islam, today, however, is medieval, compared to where we are, now, and it must adjust to secular society or be crushed by reactionaries.

  2. They were more enlightened, in many ways, than Europeans when Islam first "took over" Spain. Since that time, Western Civ has left them behind.
