Unless the power is solar, hydro or nuclear, EVs simply shift the consumption of fossil fuels to big power plants. Given energy losses converting fuel to electricity and/or transmission losses bringing that power to your vehicle, you would be burning more fuel to power your EV than if you'd simply used fossil fuel to power the vehicle, directly. And that's not accounting in any way for the environmental and monetary cost of making the batteries and disposing them. There's a place for EVs, but everyone using them, exclusively, is currently a pipe dream. People always want the quick fix, and there are no quick fixes. But the closest thing to a quick fix will be found by free markets. Government bureaucrats and politicians should stay the hell out of it. Their main impact is to steal resources from OTHER good ideas, without ever having to COMPETE wiith those other ideas. The only people guaranteed to make out on EVs are the bureaucrats, politicians and cronies lining up for government subsidies.

@dom4591 Most things don't require massive government subsidies. If EVs are so great, then they will flourish without government picking winners and losers. But Australia's a place where they can work, since Aussies happily trade their liberty for what government says is best. They'll be easier to control without cheap, convenient transportation, and Aussies love being controlled.

The crowd pushing EVs are the same people who made it impossible to build and operate nuclear power plants.

@Cultural Marxism is a myth ... whereas a gas-powered vehicle can go 400 MILES, gas up in 5 minutes, and be back on the road, without requiring a crew to swap batteries. Keep dreaming, though! It's a pretty dream, with rainbows and unicorns frolicking!

@arbortree3007 With 40% transmission losses getting that electricity from the plant to your car, you're burning about twice as much fossil fuel to power that car than if you just used it directly to power a gas-powered vehicle. That's how California solved its air pollution problem. It buys coal-generate electricity from Wyoming and sends it at great cost to California, polluting the atmosphere twice as much as they would without California's child-like "not in my backyard but yours is OK" approach to the environment.

@shaynegadsden That's part of the scam. Maintaining an older vehicle is WAY more environmentally friendly than ANYthing they're doing with EVs. But if people keep their cars 20 or 30 years, auto makers don't make enough money to be happy. The crowd who are pushing EVs are the same crowd who don't want us repairing our "durable" goods. They want us buying new cars and new phones and new computers every yer, at great economic and environmental cost, while lecturing US about our energy sins. If car makers want to save the planet, they should build cars to last a lifetime.

@thh383 Do some research on how France and other countries handle it. Pollution - including radiation - from coal power - is many times that of nuclear power, when you assess risk rationally.

I've never seen a labcoat whose research results didn't conform with the guy writing their checks. In the 1950s, there were doctors telling us how good cigarettes are for your health! And that's not even touching on the Sugar Lobby and 50 years of junk nutrition "science." It turns out that fat isn't the Great Satan they all told us it was. And the low-fat-food industry is basically poisoning us with chemicals that trick our brains into thinking they're getting food with fat in it.

That's not why. The reason people are cooling towards EVs is the push for EVs is not well-thought-out. If they're as great as you think, then the market will show that. What pisses me off is the EV fanbois don't have any regard for the harm they're causing. EVERYthing has trade-offs. That's LIFE. EVs aren't going away, but they're not THE answer, either.

They make sense for city-dwellers with short commutes. They don't make sense for everybody. If they're so great, they will dominate the transportation market in short order, without toxic, distorting interventions by government. The excuse used for government intervention is bad climate science.
