: The main distinction you could make would be that the Nazi government didn't OWN the means of production; whereas, in socialism/communism, state ownership is explicit. Thus you could argue that the U.S. system (and most of Europe) is essentially fascist. The government doesn't OWN Boeing. It just tells Boeing what to do. And Boeing, in turn, tells government what to do, in a relationship that is absolutely toxic to everybody not directly involved. One of the great ironies of our time is that the most militantly anti-fascist among us are the most fascist among us. They want state control of everything, an abolition of free markets, and suppression of any speech against their ideology as "hate speech."

@CPT Ivanitchyanus : You're too smart not to use paragraphs. "Left" originally meant you thought maybe the monarchy ought to loosen up and treat us commoners better. Its original meaning was essentially "Speak truth to power." If anything, it was the limited government side of things, aimed against the power of the monarch. Now it's kind of flipped, and "left" means you want to see civilian self-rule mutate back into all the forms of the aristocracies we set aside, when we common folk began governing ourselves. The bureaucrats are the new courtiers and nobles. It's even become hereditary. Once you're in the establishment hierarchy, your kids are magically accepted to all the finest schools, and from those schools, they are fast-tracked into the power structure's top spots. At leas that's how I see things happening in the USA. We're evolving towards the same old privilege-by-birth setup. It's how we're programmed, genetically. That's why hereditary forms are so persistent. Darwin's game. Folks want to do right by their kids...

@Mercmad : These are the exact same tactics of the Bolsheviks in the Russian Revolution. Yell, scream, stall, obfuscate until people get exhausted and go home. Then vote for all Bolshevik policies when the majority remaining are Bolshies. These tactics work very well in a state of disorganized chaos. But in societies that largely function very well, Antifa are just fringe lunatics nobody really has to listen to. The last few years are as far as they can take it, and it will come at the cost of a major right-wing reaction that may be over-reaction, depending on how far we let the lunatics go before we say "Enough is enough and no more! NO MORE!" Much of Europe, Australia, USA and Canada are getting to the Enough is Enough point.

But everybody gets the left-right thing wrong, especially now, after decades of the left being on top, becoming the establishment, and as such, becoming the new "conservative." Meh. None of it matters. A critical mass, a super-majority of Westerners, now basically believe in a fascist setup, with government running education and health care, just like Bismarck taught Hitler. We see how the Nazis brainwashed entire generations and then we turn right around and defend public schools under centralized control. AFAIC, government programs were invented to maintain the ascendancy of the existing political class. Industrialization had us common folk getting mighty independent, creative, and uppity, so the ruling elites had to do something to put the focus back on them. The people finally weaned themselves off the Jünkers, and immediately hopped in Der Fuehrer's lap. Nobody learned from WW II. We became what we said we were fighting. We're absolute dumb-asses, when you get right down to it. Staring us in the face. And nobody sees it.
