  1. Israel occupied the heielghts because they were used to lob artillery and missiles on Israel. The point is that Israel is and has been in an existential struggle since well before the Allies carved it out of Palestine. It will always be locked in this struggle. It's in an untenable situation without American backing. I don't fault Israel or the Palestinians for the extreme measures they take. They're in extremely bad - chronically bad - situations and people will take extreme measures when their backs are against a wall. The real issue at hand is whether it's our place to meddle in the affairs of the region. For me, the answer is "No." It's not our place to draw the map of the Middle East by force, and we're nearing 80 years of defending that poor decision.
