They are very predatory in their trade practices, and they produce a lot of cheap, shoddy goods. We also see case after case of Chinese infiltration of our institutions and mass bribery of officials, high and low, in government and in industry. I'm not hating on China. Or Japan. If your guest wants to remember Japanese atrocities, maybe he should be reminded of the Opium Wars and the European colonization of the Far East. History's not so black and white. Harboring hatred of Japan justifies the entire Far East to harbor hatred for European imperialism in the region. I think Japan, China, Russia, and the entire West have undergone massive culture shifts, some by force, some quite organically. But if we're going to dwell on past sins, we might as well just stay on a permanent war footing. I think if you watch your purse and defend your institutions from undue Chinese influence, China can be a good trading partner. You just have to keep them honest. For the USA's part, it doesn't even care about striking a hard bargain in trade. It will LOSE in trade just to create a dependence, and then pressure you to back another adventure costing much wealth and blood, to little purpose than fattening the wallets and expanding the power of a tiny, very toxic segment of the political class. We need to all get off our high horses. Trust, but verify. Lack of transparency implies violation and trade must be curtailed. I think EVERY nation can be held to a standard of fair trade and human rights for the people. I'd like all nations to work together on safe atomic (fission) power, personally. With proper safeguards, breeder reactors can produce all the fissile material needed for a new age of plentiful, clean energy. If we REALLY get our act together, we can generate all the electricity we could ever want, with solar power stations in Earth orbit. We'll have to grow up quite a bit before that can happen, but the clean energy is right there. With abundant clean energy, all things are possible. We can turn deserts into jungles if we wish.
