There will always be people in your situation. What's your community doing for you, or are you going to wait for the feds to step in? There's an infinite amount of wants and limited resources. Thinking government solves all your problems is not smart. People still fall through the cracks. Just different cracks. First rule of economics: Resources are limited. First rule of politics: Ignore the first rule of economics (to be re-elected).

And they're starting to see the fallout, as we speak. Cracks showing. They import about most of their doctors, now, because people living in Western society don't want to work that hard for what the government will pay. If you're really sick and don't want to wait until you die to get treatment, you fly to the USA. Cancer? Heart disease? On death's door? Rich people come to America, because they know that when government rations ANY product or service, you gotta get in line, and the quality will deteriorate. Still, if a small country wants to do it, it's about like one state in the USA doing it. Every time a state in the USA has tried it, they've gone broke doing it. Do you really trust your bureaucrats to do right for you? Do you really trust the same kinds of politicians who sent millions over the top in WWI to die in sprays of machine gun bullets and poison gas? It's bad enough we give government the monopoly on use of force. But giving education and health care over to government represents 2 legs of the Nazi tripod. The 3rd is control of media, and if I didn't know better, I'd say the elites control that shit, too. Just softening societies up to be walked all over, as we see happening in most of the countries listed.

@snowflakemelter214 : Heh. You probably don't need to shout. But I'm with you in spirit. The problem with all this kind of thinking is eventually you run out of other people's money. Some countries, with very uniform cultures, can probably do this sort of thing. But those kinds of cultures are very conformist, and I don't want to spend my life living in such a society. We're already seeing the graying-down of USA society by these kinds of people. Don't offend anyone. Don't say anything that disagrees with the consensus opinion. Don't smoke. Don't drink. Don't do drugs. Don't do anything that might possibly offend anyone. Microaggressions. Walking on tippy toes whenever you have an original thought. Most of all, don't hold anybody accountable for their actions, unless they violated one of the preceding ad hoc taboos created by Group Think.

@piggy8761 : Our for-profit system is basically fascist, with every decision being made by federal regulators and price-setters already. Anyone who thinks the U.S. health-care system is free-market capitalism are idiots. It's all being run by the government, so of course, the big insurers are taken care of, because that's how fascism works! People are rebelling against the wrong thing, which is not at all unusual, but still very concerning.

It's like we live back in the 14th Century, when it was heresy to claim that the Earth revolved around the Sun! They NEED assholes like you to troll them, because they don't listen to reason. EXACTLY. If it works at all, it works on a very small scale, where the costs and the community are well-acquainted. If your community can't or won't support as good of health care as can reasonably be provided, what hope does a central government thousands of miles away (in the case of USA, USSR, e.g.) of doing a decent job for actual people? I don't want bureaucrats in the national capital deciding for me what's good for me and my neighborhood. I want me and my community to decide. It's hard to argue against this sort of thing because it's all unicorns and rainbows, when it's some stranger's money. But that same stranger is going to decide who stands where in line. I guess some folks think it's NORMAL to stand in line and take what the Lord and Lady decide is OK for them to have. USA shouldn't be like that, but there are a lot of people who think that bureaucrats are magically imbued with better judgement than the average person looking out for themSELVES.

Insurance company draws up contracts based on actuarial science and then the government steps in and says "And you're also going to cover this, even though that wasn't part of the deal." So they gouge. And it doesn't even have to be based on what they know, but based on what next unforeseen move the feds might make. Health care is for doctors and patients and whatever the local community can or will put in. You guys want it all to be federal because you see it as an endless supply of money. This kind of thinking is why our children and grandchildren are saddled with debts we ran up spoiling ourSELVES at their expense.

Tony Mario : Socialized medicine works GREAT in Canada, since if they need anything serious taken care of, they can always duck South of the border, where things are still a LITTLE bit free. When it all comes crashing down, they'll find some scapegoat and never question their original assumptions about the PROPER scope and role of centralized government. To them, it just looks like free money and utopia, because of course the government will run everything perfectly. MY take on history is if you want to help the robber barons, create a government agency to regulate them. It'll take them 5 minutes to buy off the regulators the government conveniently puts in one place and woefully underpays for the amount of skill needed to actually administer them. What could go wrong? USDA? Without them, Monsanto wouldn't be force-feeding us GMO foods, with toxins PURPOSELY built into them so they are pest resistant. Or injecting beef with antibiotics and hormones. That's because the government says it's OK. Or the EPA fining a company $1 million for practices that makes it BILLIONS. Or clearcutting old-growth forest, with roads that wouldn't be constructed without the U.S. Forest Service in places where it's un-economic to BUILD those roads, without government help. The list goes on and on. The intention is always there, but nobody ever thinks about the consequences. They just want to feel like they're doing something. I hate that about our species.

Give ME your money and I will guarantee free health care, too! It'll suck, of course, but I'll gain a lot of power and wealth as long as I can preserve the lie that I'm actually fixing anything, and NOT just making myself popular and filling the pockets of my cronies.

@schlangenbiss1 : And you think putting government in charge is the solution, when in fact, the reason there's all this inefficiency and duplication of services is because of government interference in the first place. Promise everything to Medicaid recipients, and when the money doesn't match the cost of the service, just keep on as you are doing, and make the health care providers and insurance companies pick up the difference. The corporations couldn't abuse the consumers without the direct and indirect assistance of government.

You can point to how fine and tall the tower is, but everything you do just sets you up for catastrophic collapse in the future. But that's OK. Most progressives will be dead by the time their children experience the crash. In the meantime, they get to point to all the winners, oblivious to the losers.
