As the West spins into madness and decadence, one wonders if there might be something said for tapping the brakes on this "progress" thing.

You left out the Mongols.

@ArawnOfAnnwn People colonize other countries because they CAN. Those being colonized hate it, but the people back home love all the goodies and will rationalize anything for the benefits that accrue. Most of the French people were decent people. but they believed Napoleon was awesome and they loved the goodies and glory his armies brought home. Not a fan of the British Empire, but it is a fact that their former colonies fared much better than former spanish or Portuguese colonies. There's just something about the legacy of Magna Carta, however imperfect the English were and are.

@ArawnOfAnnwn All great countries become so by ruthless expansion. How do you think India got so big ? The fact is that countries colonize other countries because they CAN. Because the other country was too weak to resist. I agree, though, that there's a lot of unwonted arrogance. You don't see Mongols apologizing for Genghis. People put on such airs, both conqueror and conquered, but especially the guy sitting in my EZ chair, typing my comment.

If a tenet of your belief system is to impose your beliefs by force, you're on the wrong side of history. All religions are susceptible. It just takes the right combination of economic/military/social conditions for the regressive aspects to come to the fore, or for (a) militant faction(s) to take over. The Muslim conquest of spain was mostly a good thing. Then radical Islam spread like cancer and they tried to conquer Europe, which was their eventual undoing, uniting Europeans against them.
