As a libertarian, the left scares me far more.

@Soundslikefreedom58 The American left wants big government. I want small government. I'm a classical liberal. That means liberty and limited government. The American left has re-branded serfdom and called it virtue.

@Soundslikefreedom58 I'm saying if you're worried about would-be autocrats, maybe you should try to work to REDUCE the size, scope and role of the federal government, to limit the harm any one jerk can do. You guys want the government to do everything for everybody without realizing that you're giving the government power to do anything to anybody.

@Michael-o9e8i Yes, I am. Are you familiar with the terms "straw man" and "ad hominem attacks?"

@Michael-o9e8i Probably not. IQ about 140. PhD in Math. Probably not too swift. The authoritarian left is very concerning. Change my mind.

@mattbailey1515 Trump wasn't the one pushing mandates (Biden). Trump didn't arrest reporters (Obama). Trump didn't weaponize federal agencies against political opponents (Obama and Biden). You have it stuck in your head that he's an autocrat, when Trump governed much more lightly than the establishment that hates him. Why you're shilling for that establishment escapes me.

@LeTrashPanda I'm not defending Bush or McCain.

@Ivy94F Which statement, Ivy? I'm not a big fan of forever war. Not a big fan of the Israel Project. Not a big fan of the welfare state. Not a big fan of government inserting itself into every aspect of health care and education. State-run media, health care, and education was the tripod on which Hitler's Germany rested. So what did we do after defeating him? We kept ourselves on a war footing for decades, justifying all manner of infringements on free speech and free press in the name of fighting communism.

@Soundslikefreedom58 What makes you think I'm advocating for autocracy? I see the Democrats as being the ones abusing their powers of office at present. I was pretty disappointed with a lot of things I saw at the Republican Convention. I think Trump is more likely to devolve federal powers and departments to the several states, where such powers rightly belong. I keep talking about limited government and you keep saying "Why do you like autocracy?" You're not making any sense.

@michelelee704 You're touching on something that I find concerning about the establishment conservatives. They don't seem to eschew the expansion of government powers. Neither do the liberals. They both want the government to have supreme power and do things the way THEY want things to be done, rather than BOTH sides relinquishing power and leaving people to solve their problems collectively and voluntarily, rather than by force from whoever happens to hold the whip. The Republicans used to be better. The Democrats have sought power. The Republicans lost their ability to win elections and became the same pandering demagogues that the Democrats were. Meanwhile, the Democrats, who used to be anti-war are the best friends of the military industrial complex. We're caught in a uni-party matrix, where "bipartisan" means bigger, over-reaching government and forever war. It's sad. The Libertarians are a lost cause, too.

@Michael-o9e8i Scintillating refutation "You're clearly not too bright." When you can't hold your own in a debate, you resort to character assassination. Bravo!

@AnthonyOMulligan-yv9cg I don't know where you get that. You seem to be telling on yourself more than saying anything relevant to the conversation.

@mattbailey1515 When did I advocate for autocracy? I didn't. What I did do was pay attention at the slew of executive orders from each of the last 3 presidents. I'm in opposition to the Democrat establishment and the Republican establishment. I want liberty, limited government, separation of powers, the whole 9 yards. I see people arguing over who gets to run everything and I want a smaller government that runs far less than it does. I think free markets enforce a much higher standard of behavior by businesses than regulatory agencies that are almost always captured by the biggest and meanest companies they're supposedly there to regulate.
1
@AnthonyOMulligan-yv9cg Probably Trump, during COVID. Biden came close, 3 years after COVID, with massive new spending bills. Trump was doing a classic Keynesian pump-priming after the mass-formation psychosis and panic of COVID. Trump's big mistake there was putting the crooks at NIAID (Fauci) in charge of the COVID response. Lock-downs, masks, mandates, ... All that stuff was ruinous to the economy and did us very little good. Trump deferred to the wrong experts.

@Trace-l7k Nothing. I help the people around me every day. What I do NOT do is kid myself that the federal government is going to run health care any better than private individuals who care. You're virtue-signaling with other people's money. That's not compassion or generosity. It's extortion.
1
@Trace-l7k Don't you think that if a majority of people felt like you did and gave as much as you want me to give, that everybody's health needs would be provided? Why must you invest your compassion in coldhearted bureaucrats, who can decide tomorrow that the service YOU need is not on the list? And what happens when the resources get stretched thin? Substandard care, nationwide. The best doctors leaving medicine because the bureaucrats decide what their work is worth, rather than negotiating that, voluntarily, with their patients... How about you do your damnedest to raise money for your local hospital? Try to make where YOU live a little bit better, rather than trying to dictate to everybody what services are covered and what they are to be reimbursed for? No. It's always easier to virtue-signal and vote for the politicians who promise you everything at no cost, while you and everybody else gets charged double for substandard care.
1
@wgooetrik Where do you get this from? When did I say books should be banned or women's rights should be taken away? Are you cuckoo?
1
@Trace-l7k After the COVID response, you want to put these government clowns in charge of your health care? Really? Jimmy Dore, whom I love like a brother, has the same cognitive dissonance. You KNOW the government's in the pocket of billionaires, but you want it to EXPAND into new areas? sigh Insanity. After government pushed seed oils at the behest of Procter & Gamble? After government shields Monsanto and destroys family farms? After government indemnifies Big Pharma from any damages due to untested medications? After government bails out the bankers and the auto makers? After the Forest Service lets what forests it hasn't built roads for the timber industry to clearcut go up in smoke? After the military spends $500 on a hammer? After parents are called "terrorists" for objecting to pornography in the school library?
1
@Trace-l7k I believe in bodily autonomy. That's why I refused the Jab. You probably think I'm evil because I did so. What about my bodily autonomy? I don't virtue signal to make OTHERS be kind, by MY lights. I choose to BE kind and am content with that. You want to improve the world, but you think it can all be done in a day, by force, from on high, by holy politicians. I'm saying none (very few) of those guys seeking public office are in it to help anyone but themselves, and you're putting your faith in the wrong people and the wrong institutions. Help your neighbor and be content. Encourage others to do so. That's what i do. Try it. You might like it.

@shady-381 What on Earth are you talking about?

@edmer68 An insult is not a refutation.
