@acuilnos I think Japanese and Chinese are delighted when a foreigner has taken the trouble to learn their language and learn some of their customs.

@corneliusthecrowtamer1937 They were forced to open up, at gunpoint.

@revilokid I think most of us understood what you were saying. @R-Righteous just likes to dunk on people, apparently.

@qc6713 As an outsider, the main problem Japan has is natural resources. It HAS to trade. If I were "running" Japan, I'd want to make it the most advanced in atomic power generation in the world, and eliminate imported oil for energy generation.

You don't want to look at them, but would you look away? Not knowing the crazy person, there's no way I'm turning my back on them, for my own safety.

Japanese learned how to live sustainably and maintain peace and harmony in enormous, clean, well-managed metropolises, when Europeans were living in filth. There's a lot to be said for that. But I think the culture gave up a lot of their individuality and privacy for the greater good, and in some ways, that's sad. I'd probably be a pretty poor representative of the USA if I visited Japan. I'm too outspoken, and I probably smell bad to most Japanese, because I like nothing better than my meat and potatoes. Even if you keep yourself clean - which I do - I think the difference in diet would be pretty noticeable to a Japanese native, the same way I can smell people from some parts of China.

@SetiKt Nobody talks about it, but when different races collide throughout human history, people see the other tribe as monkeys. There is a strong, built-in identification with members of family, clan, and tribe. Knowing them allows you to see the human side. Asians thought Euros looked like big, hairy apes, and Euros thought Asians looked like little monkeys, when the Portuguese first arrived in the Far East. Both sides thought the other was barbaric. The Asian side was usually cleaner and smelled better. The Euro side thought its Christianity was the only civilized religion.

@lenk172 You mean "short term economic gain." When the political class plays games to artificially boost their economy, the foundations of the economy weaken.
