  1. The Baron had no idea how many Fremen there were. He only got an inkling from his new, temporary "twisted mentat," Thufir Hawat, after Duke Leto was dead. Hawat figured it out from the Baron's recounting of a conversation with Count Hasimir Fenring, who worked for the Emperor. "Witch's blood!" was what Hawat said, as I recall. The Baron innocently talked about how he might use DUNE as a training planet for his own troops, following the Sardaukar's use of Salusa Secundus, a similarly hellish place, where only the best survived. The Emperor already understood the threat from the Fremen of Arrakis, whose entire lifestyle was basically better than Sardaukar training! But I don't think the Baron ever really figured out how many Fremen there were until the very end. Hawat, never dreaming that Muad'dib was Paul, took all that information and basically made the Baron's plan for Feyd (Fade, not Fay-yed, imo) even better. The Sardaukar were the MUSCLE, not the precision. It was the Baron who paid for them to come to Arrakis. The cost was monumental. Anyway, I don't think the Emperor knew how strong or how numerous the Fremen were. To me that's a bit of a plot hole, because the Bene Gesserit must have known. They were all up in the Fremen's business, and had even engineered their religion, centuries before. It just seems a bit unlikely that they would've withheld that bit of information from the Emperor, when Mohiam was basically working for him. It never made sense to me that Mohiam would be so pissed-off at Jessica and at the predicament they were in, after Paul used the family atomics to destroy the Shield Wall protecting Arrakeen. The Emperor had no idea what he was up against, even though he knew enough not to want the Baron to make DUNE a prison planet, like Salusa Secundus.

  2. In the book, the Duke killed Piter and the Baron escaped unscathed. The Baron was crippled by Reverend Mother Gaius Mohiam, who served up an STD for him when he raped and degraded her to get revenge for being forced to sleep with a woman as part of the Bene Gesserit breeding program. The result of that union was Jessica, Paul's mother. @Invictus1293

  3. They were TOLD the storms in the South were "ridiculous," and supporting that claim were all the spice-mining expeditions that were lost. There was NO satellite surveillance of Arrakis at ALL, because of an enormous annual spice bribe paid to the Spacing Guild by the Fremen @Invictus1293  The fact that most of the Fremen were living and transforming the planet in the southern hemisphere was a closely guarded secret, maintained by bribes and violent attacks on all expeditions to the South. If people were allowed to see what was going on in the South, they'd see green things growing in remote locations and slowly spreading! The Fremen had a centuries-long plan (See "spannungsbogen") to transform DUNE into a green paradise, following the guidance and vision of the Imperial Planetologist, Pardot Kynes, who "went native" and married a Fremen. His son grew up to be "Liet-Kynes."

  4. That's a bit black-and-white. As Thomas Sowell would say "There aren't any solutions, just trade-offs." We need order to function. Too much order is tyranny. There's always a balance to be struck and a balance always is struck between the two. One key is to impose the minimum amount of order in order for society to function, healthily. Another key is to strictly limit the power in the hands of any one person or group. That means limited government. If you read the DUNE books, the "Honored Matres" were a twisted version of the Reverend Mothers of the Bene Gesserit. They came to power as a result of "nanny government," the so-called modern-day liberal utopia some think we're currently enjoying (if only "far right white supremacists" could be wiped-out, according to them). These nanny-government types are becoming increasingly authoritarian. The Honored Matres took that to an extreme, but they were originally the bureaucrat class in the human colonies from which they arose.  @zaydeshaddox7015

  5. It doesn't matter. Suffice it to say that none of us is perfect; therefore, none of us should be given too much power. People want to be saved. That means they want someone super-powerful to intervene on their behalf. That means they want somebody to have too much power.  @dawnfire82

  6. A high position is like any other possession. That's why I try not to own anything too valuable. Pretty soon, it owns ME. I'll worry about it getting ripped off. I'll worry about it being damaged in some way (OMG! A SCRATCH on my Brand New Car!). Then there are those in positions of power who know exactly how sneaky and disingenuous they were to GET that position. They start projecting the same motives and behaviors on others (That's why Democrats act the way they do.). They're like cheating husbands who will never believe that their wife is faithful. @zaydeshaddox7015
