They had a weak circumstantial case and needed a confession. The stakes were high enough for the defendant to not take the chance of a trial. Like so many perpetrators, he underwent interrogation without a lawyer. He broke down after 14 hours of grilling that no decent defense lawyer would tolerate. The mental defect that made him a murderer came with a cognitive defect. There was something inside him in both Watertown and Rochester that made him give it up relatively easily once he was arrested. And he never lawyered up.

Anything he says under hypnosis is suspect. He could be manipulated or manipulator, and you might not be able to tell if you sat through all the sessions.
