  1. Russians don't have to hold the city to interrupt supply to Ukrainian attackers. Logistics are difficult for both sides, with stand-off weapons capable of attacking convoys behind enemy lines. The StormShadow and other stand-off weapons may force the Russians to abandon meat-grinder and go on the full assault, to eliminate the StormShadow and possible future ATACM from being able to reach Russian soil. I think a big reason/goal for the SMO is to keep the fighting on the Ukrainian side of the border. StormShadow and ATACM raise the intensity level, escalating this from a "Destroy the war-fighting capabilities of the next-door neighbor" to total war. Before the long-range missiles, this was a war of attrition, and Russia was content to do the attriting on the other side of the border.
