@JanineGarverick Trump's surrounded by neocons. He wants to do what the people elected him for, but like most presidents, he's way out of his depth and totally dependent on his staff. He got the staff a little more "right" in his 2nd term, but he doesn't have the greatest discernment.

I disagree with Larry's point about "no concessions." There are certain issues on which Russia clearly shouldn't compromise, but there is a lot of flexibility as to the specific details of the eventual peace. I agree that they can't trust Western diplomats. As long as they achieve their security goals, and put real teeth into the final peace arrangement, they should be OK. It's a "trust but verify" and more than that, "We reserve the right to resume operations if you're in violation of any of the terms of the peace." I think the war of attrition has finally ground down what forces Ukraine + NATO had, and that Russia will rapidly achieve all of its strategic goals fairly quickly, now. Then they'll be ready to stop fighting. With the intransigence of the West against what seem to me to be pretty reasonable terms, it is pretty clear that Russia needs to find a military solution. There may not ever be a real peace agreement. Russia may simply stop advancing and simply fortify the front lines, and start fighting defensively, attacking in proportion to the attacks against them.
