  1. They stopped doing their job a long time ago. During RussiaGate, one leaker deep inside Obama/Trump/Biden administration pushed a false story to two different news agencies and the news agencies then used each other as the 2nd source. It was circular confirmation, without any real interest in multiple other sources. Just quote each other back and forth and make it seem as if it's canon. We have the same thing going on in academia, where political activists peer-review each others' articles, giving a patina of objectivity and sound research that the articles don't deserve. Worse than that, once you get bad canon in the literature, you can cite "reputable sources" for even more insane theories and theses. What's weird is that they can't do anything but double down. Not to double down is to lose all. So they keep pushing the same nonsense, while the institutions whose authority they hijacked simply crumble around them.
