I don't think it's distance learning that's the problem. It's the lack of teacher-student-parent planning and training for the change. Kids do need to see and play with other kids. That doesn't mean you should pack 30 kids into one room for a one-size-fits-none lecture, however. I usually side with conservatives on most things, as a libertarian, but their issues with indoctrination are more because they don't like what's being indoctrinated. But they argue for a return to indoctrination that - they think - is more in line with THEIR values, even though the indoctrination has always had its toxic aspects.
