An atmosphere of "I'll obey what laws I feel like because I'm better and smarter than everybody else" was created by Barack Obama. I think it's more a twisted logic of compassion than a ruthless re-election calculation. I don't think EU countries started out thinking unhindered immigration was the only way to get liberal governments re-elected. They come by their insane attitudes and policies honestly. American liberals do like to parrot what they feel their more "advanced" brethren in Europe are pushing. They wish the U.S. had the same kind of volatile parliamentary system as is the norm in Europe, as well, and see the Protector of Civil Rights - the U.S. Constitution - as an outdated obstacle to Liberal Utopia, such as they are creating in California. It makes them feel superior and smart - not to mention more virtuous than regular folks - and reinforces their belief in using government to solve all problems. The fact that this kind of thinking is handy for getting re-elected - at least until the bill finally comes due - is just an added bonus for Democrats.

So you're a high-salaried skilled worker? Good for you, Michelle. Do you use your hard-won knowledge to run a business? What's your housing situation? How are things for regular folks who make more than the poverty line but less than 6 figures - which is where MOST of us hard-working schlumps find ourselves. And what kind of house can you afford if you make low 6 figures (say $100,000/yr).
