  1. Smoot-Hawley, revisited? Tariffs are a tough call. Foreign interests can dump cheap products and cripple key industries. It takes time to rebuild your manufacturing if foreign interests later decide to cut you off, or you get so dependent on their products that you're helpless when they dump pure trash products on you. I'm generally suspicious of tariffs, though. They can prop up inefficient industries, at the expense of all the rest of us. And they drive up the cost of everything associated with that industry. Outwardly, it's a tax on imports. Inwardly, it's a tax on all consumers, which of course hurts the poorest among us the most. And aNOTHER thing! I always felt like it was only fair to lay tariffs or fees (or better yet, just don't do trade with) on countries whose products are cheaper because they're abusing their labor.
