  1. He's spent a good deal of his life as an FBI agent, rubbing shoulders with people with high-dollar and big-name-school educations, and they look down their noses at us ordinary, uncultured masses. The stench of us at Walmart is enough to make him sick.

  2. We've had problems with security background checks in government agencies since JFK, at least. A book I read many years ago on this subject is entitled "The Ordeal of Otto Otepka." It chronicles how a deputy chief of security was unable to get anybody to listen to him, when people were taking high-level positions without proper security checks. People are appointed and take on acting positions, even though the vetting process isn't finished, on waivers. You can see this happen when one party is stalling the confirmation of a presidential appointee. But you can also see it happening when political hacks and other shady characters are being appointed.
