I think the Mueller investigation, after all the sparks and smoke, has actually helped secure Trump's position, and raised awkward questions for his opponents. I think Sessions' self-recusal from the whole thing was the only way to get the investigation packed with Democrat hacks, i.e., give the Democrats and mainstream media enough rope to hang themselves. Trump couldn't have taken them on, directly, but watching them fumble around, trying to find dirt where there was none AND avoid turning up dirt on their allies actually put the Mueller team in a deceptively vulnerable position. Turning up a low-budget troll farm as their only serious headway discredits the whole narrative, which is reaping political advantage for Trump. "Really? That's all you've got?" Crazy like a fox.
