@Johnny Rotten : McConnell is the Republican version of your typical swamp creature. It's astounding to hear him sound like a conservative, even occasionally. He's one of those careerist senators who are virtually indistinguishable from careerist Democrats. They all like spending lots of money. They all like the crony capitalism that benefits THEIR constituencies (and hence their re-election campaigns). In McConnell's (and Grassley's) case, this means big agriculture subsidies for farmers. I think you hate him for the small number of things he's done that I sort of like, and you probably like most of the big spending he's supported over the decades. He's a Republican, and I'd rather see a Republican majority than a Demokkkrat majority. But I doubt I'd miss Mitch if a young, principled Republican were to take his seat. But the committee system is based on seniority, and so voters want their guy to have seniority. As committee chairs, they can bring a LOT of federal money to their states. I despise the way Congress governs itself.

Democrats are chafing at the fact that they created what I think they call a "Nuclear Option," where they only need a bare majority to invoke cloture and end filibusters. The Republicans used the filibuster to impede Obama's appointments, so the Democrat-run Senate passed a new rule that said they could end all debate with a majority vote, rather than the 2/3 originally in the rules, pushing the up-or-down vote on appointments. They did this to speed appointments that were stalling in the Senate. They never imagined the tables would be turned and the Republicans would own a majority in the Senate AND the White House. And now Trump's appointments are sailing through, no matter how much mud the Democrats fling (Kavanaugh). And it INFURIATES the Democrats. And I love it. Same for executive orders. Obama bypassed the Congress many times with executive orders. It seemed like a cool way to ram through what he wanted without consulting the people (indirectly) through Congress. But sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, and Trump has dismantled much of what Obama did, simply by issuing countermanding orders. I think it's hilarious, and it illustrates how using power for your own ends just means the next guy can use that same power against you! I love it. Karma.
