Actually, the first time we meddled led to the second world war, which has led to us running an empire without calling it an empire. We lost our way.

@Melior_Traiano I stand corrected. But WW I was the real biggie. Yes, our leaders have been imperialistic every chance they got. It's a disease of leadership. Don't forget Commodore Perry sailing into Tokyo Harbor in the 1830s (I believe).

@Melior_Traiano WWI was where we became players in earnest, contrary to all our principles of limited government and nonintervention in the affairs of other nations. World War I was a European thing and we should've stayed out. We used gunboat diplomacy on Japan in the 1830s. Have you heard of the Spanish-American War? Our leaders garnered much fame and accolades for being "strong," but WW I was a mistake for us. It brought about WW II. It would have been better for the Europeans to settle their own affairs, without us throwing our weight into it, and meddling around the world ever since. Wilson ran on not fighting in Europe, but then his government went and did it, anyway.

@Melior_Traiano The French AND the British WANTED World War I. The French lusted after Alsace-Lorraine and the Saar Basin. A-L was taken by force of arms. The Saar VOTED to be part of Germany. I studied this in college, doing research for History of Modern Europe. You'd be amazed by the correspondence between French and British leaders before the war. Without U.S. involvement, there would've been no "unconditional surrender." Without unconditional surrender, the terms of the eventual peace would've been more equitable. To understand WW I, you have to go back to Franco-Prussian War of 1870, where France lost a lot of territory. From then until 1914, the French were scheming to get back those territories, and they eventually got their wish, with American help.

Very smart man, even though he supports the apartheid ethno-state. We fought World War II against those who fervently believed that the end justifies the means, who wanted an ethno-state, and now he's telling us that the end justifies the means.
