Maybe as cities became cities and great wealth for individuals became (more) possible, it was a "NIMBY" thing. The stench from raising pigs in confined spaces is abominable. Maybe the well-to-do kept eating pork for centuries, but wanted it raised outside of town, so there was mounting pressure on the lower classes to end the pig farming in town. Maybe "God wants it this way" was their lever on the masses. It's a cheap source of protein, and I can see the ruling class being at odds with the lower classes. Thanks for the knowledge. I used to think it was a tribal hygiene thing, made law. But your theory(ies) seem more rooted in evidence and other economic and establishment reasons. To this day, NObody wants to be down-wind of a pig farm. I see goats followed by pigs as a great way to restore the landscape. We have kind of a weird relationship with thistle in the Pacific Northwest. I've come to believe thistle is GOOD. You just need to bring in the goats to return the land to other production AFTER the thistle has done its work bringing minerals to the surface and aerating the soil for the next, intentional plant grouping. Let the pigs root around after the goats. That soil will be ready for planting, without much more work. Rather than more chemicals, we need more goat herders!

@coryaw95 In a human mother, we'd call it Munchausen's by proxy.
