  1. Meanwhile, we keep planting trees in the desert. In parts of the USA, there are more trees than before Europeans arrived. That doesn't mean deforestation is a good thing. The question is how to fight it, without being authoritarian about it. Because authoritarians will clearcut the whole damn thing if they decide the "greater good," i.e., their own self-interest, demands it.
