@airsoftfreak11 : More men died from shot than from cannon balls. I don't imagine being hit by one cannon ball, which is very improbable, unless you're packed in a tight formation. When using artillery against infantry, it's scattershot, only not those little BBs you see in a shotgun shell, but 100 (or so) musket balls about an inch across. Artillery would riddle infantry with holes. Rock-paper-scissors is when the infantry reach the gunners. If the infantry KNOW there's artillery, they seek cover or they die. They'd know to fan out if they were assaulting big guns. Gotta figure the 27th's commander got caught flat-footed by the maneuver. When I think of how the British still sold commissions to nobles or near-nobles looking to raise their status (and their wealth), it's a wonder there ever was a British empire! They definitely produced some good soldiers (and seamen), but what the ranks had to put up with, sometimes...

@shawn576 Yes. The Maginot Line was fine, as far as they took it. But hey. Let me finish watching the video. The Blitz went through Belgium quicker than anyone but the Germans thought it would, but the French still had enough time to rally better than they did. I think that's also true, going into the video. To their credit and detriment, French Democracy eschewed defense spending and turned inward, while the Germans turned a jealous eye outward and went on a military spending binge.

Also knew the bit about explosive shells. Revolution in naval warfare. No more wooden-hulled ships. Mechanized, pro-driven, armor-plated in the wars of the 20th Century. Amazing how much you get out so briefly. The background music needs to be more in the background. Voice needs to be over top, more. The music was a distraction.

50 yards, too.

Thanks. I'm pretty ignorant about this particular piece of history. Bits and pieces, like its effects on the British armed services. I think that's when they quit handing out commissions to rich people and aristocrats.

Why do all the history readers say "thee" instead of "thuh" before consonants. You only do the long 'e' in "the" before a vowel. I hear this all the time when history channels are reading from written scripts. It's like they think the long 'e' sounds smarter. Hard to get into videos, sometimes, because of this affectation.

That's right. And it fits with Putin's Bible-thumping ways. Long-term, the Russians gotta believe they're entitled to access to the Med from the Black Sea. But the Turks still own the straits. If anything, Putin's been trying to hold on to what he already had, against the encroachments of Islam.

Wellington's line formations were a critical factor in Britain's campaign in Spain. Caught the French a number of times in column against Wellington's lines, and they peppered the French.
