... or a wolf whose coat has gone mostly to mange, that gets bitten by another rabid animal. Or a human who's caught rabies, like you say, and it was after a rabid wolf got put down, somewhere or was seen somewhere. But there are also lots of other directions that legend or myth comes from. It's pretty deep-seated. An archetype for the animal within us all.
