  3. That many people living that close together need to be super-polite, super-conformist, and super-tolerant. But USA's always been pluralistic. That's why a lot of things that work in other countries doesn't work, here. It's also why we have always absorbed more immigrants than any other country without blowing up. We just deal with the background friction between cultures within our own borders. Europe's really getting slammed by mass immigration because so much of what each country is comes from a shared cultural heritage. Immigrants don't share that heritage, so things that used to work pretty good have stopped working.
