As for "If Russia holds onto its gains," you should hear Lindsey Graham ranting about the important minerals we must keep out of Russian hands! Maybe Graham and his pals in the Deep State should've thought about this before 2014, when Ukraine still owned Crimea and lived at peace with its neighbors. THEY were the ones who provoked the annexation of Crimea and the subsequent hostilities, trying to run Ukraine by remote control and use it as a hammer against the Russians.
