They're just smart enough to understand inputs and outputs on a deep level, mechanistically, but they have no concept of Adam smith's Invisible Hand, and the motivations of individuals, which underlies The Machine that Runs Itself. They all think The Machine would run ever so much better if only everyone were as clever as they, or better yet, if only everyone were obedient to their enlightened will.
