  2. Smalltown America is much as it has ever been. There aren't thugs roaming the streets in most small towns across the nation. And if anybody DOES get out of hand, the cops are there and if the cops aren't there, there will be armed citizens confronting them. The madness he describes is an urban phenomenon. In the cities, where the rules of Nature are suspended in favor of deluded intellectuals' fantasies, there's enough wealth and inertia for them to stumble ahead, even though they're broken. That kind of nonsense can't go on in small towns, because there just isn't enough money to pretend Nature isn't a thing. If it doesn't work, the town goes broke immediately, and the mayor's run out on a rail.
